We Welsh seem to be everywhere these days – don’t we? We win far more than our fair share of medals in the Olympics and the Paralympics. It is a Welsh scientist, Dr Lyn Evans from a coalmining family in the Cynon Valley, for instance, leading the Large Hadron Collider project in Switzerland – one of the greatest scientific experiments of all time.
In almost every field of endeavour you will find someone Welsh in the leading team…and yet. And yet we do not have our own team in the Olympic Games (where our flag is banned), and neither, incidentally, does another hugely influential nation, Scotland. Yet both countries play “international” Rugby – and football – against other nations who do.
So what does national exactly mean here? If we do not have the right to compete with other nations of the world on equal terms as do Ireland, Lithuania, Estonia, Jamaica etc., then why this pretence of Wales and Scotland as ‘nations’ at all? Why do we play ‘international’ football and Rugby matches, yet not have a ‘national’ Olympic team?
If we are a nation then we should stand up for full representation in the Olympic game as everywhere else – the UN included. If we are not a nation, then why bother with any of it at all? We’re just deluding ourselves – and making fools of ourselves at the same time.
This is the Great Big Lie at the heart of the Great British “Union”.

Spot on as usual – no wonder Cambriapolitico is the rising star in the Blogosphere!
that would be good. An open top bus tour to welcome er just David Davies, the only individual welsh gold medallist. Then again all of the medallists train outside of Wales…
