Real Lib Dem radicalism – with a call for ‘more thought’ on which budget to cut

It’s time for all politicians to be thinking of budget cuts.  These will amount to £600m per year according to Tory leader Nick Bourne.

And all because successive London governments have followed policies which have exaggerated bankers in the London area to enable them to become come the lions and leaders of the economy.

They have been lauded in place of the manufacturers and producers who are able (when they exist…) to bring real wealth to these islands off the west coast of the Netherlands.

But it’s interesting to note the cop-out being adopted by one of the political parties in the Assembly.

While the Tories under Nick Bourne quickly focus on free prescriptions for the wealthy and free school breakfasts, the best that the Lib Dems under their new leader Kirsty Williams can offer is the suggestion of “an immediate spending review”.

Other leading figures in the party – such as Jenny Randerson, her earlier rival to replace Mike German as leader – have already put forward a number of solid suggestions. Pretty similar to those adopted by the Tories, to tell the truth.

But Ms Williams, AM for Brecon and Radnor, had nothing much more to offer than some sort of “all party” meeting to agree a consensus on the cuts on which all parties are in agreement.

Her idea is to obtain a consensus which avoids cuts to “front-line services”.

But perhaps the only consensus which would emerge would be to delete the need for the rather pathetic Lib Dems…
