A Tory vote winner
The Welsh Tory strategy for countering Nationalists appears to be to ‘give in’ on national sovereignity and full devolution but repair Unionism by insisting on ‘ federalisation’ to the UK in a sort of United States of Britain. This is prefigured in a book by David Melding AM.
Nationalists should be aware that this could potentially be a real vote winner for the Tories and could destroy the Plaid Cymru vote in the predominantly English speaking urban constituencies of Wales such as the South and North East and Borders.
THE United Kingdom is in danger of disintegration and should embrace a federal structure of government and create individual parliaments in each nation, Conservative AM David Melding declares in a major book published today.
He envisages a new constitutional settlement which could cut the number of MPs at Westminster to 300 and officially recognise the sovereignty over domestic issues of the parliaments of Wales, England, Scotland and Northern Ireland.

The Western Mail always seem to go to this rent a quote MP, David Davies, Conservative MP for Monmouth – a former Assembly Member and a leading devo-sceptic, for anything negative about Wales and its future.
In fact it seems as if it is only to him they do go, I am glad I have stopped buying it.
We realy do need a Welsh daily newspaper.
Good on David Melding for having the guts and vision to say something interesting and thought out on devolution. Pity he’s not in government he’s a sensitive and sensible politician.
Now, what do Labour AM’s (who are in power and expect to be so after 2011) have to say? Where do they expect or want Wales to be (as opposed to warning us all about the dangers of independence)?
The only way this is a potential vote-winner for the Tories is if the party itself actually adopts the message, on a Welsh and also I think British level. Cold day in Hell springs to mind…
Most Conservatives think Melding is mad, so no chance of any of his ravings being adopted as policy. The sooner that Melding buggers off and joins Plaid or the Lib Dems the better.
