Films and Politics

DSCF0108You can tell alot about the state of a political party by the film images they evoke or epitomise.

For me, the films that the Labour Party (currently) calls to mind are  ‘Downfall‘ and ‘Frost/Nixon‘. The Conservatives  evoke  ‘The Dead Zone‘  and the Lib Dems some sort of Greek opera maybe Woody Allen’s ‘ Mighty Aphrodite‘.  We all have our own choices and it is quite entertaining to ask people what films they might associate with a particular  political party. I invite Cambria Politico readers to add their choices in the comments below.

With this premise in mind, I am at a loss as to which films to associate with Plaid Cymru. Clearly, a major movie is needed to embed the Party into the collective unconsciousness of Welsh voters. Ancient and worthy documentaries about toll scuffles, industrial exploitation, mining or green valleys (duh?) or the minor  skirmishes of history against the Saes is not enough. A Welsh ‘Braveheart‘ or de-Anglicised Arthurian legend  is needed. Tales from the Mabinogion are too diffuse for film with sometimes incomprehensible (to the modern mind) mythological connatations.

There is a Glwyndwr movie in production, some big names apparently.

  2. Stonemason says:

“One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest” !

    Al,

Is that a fact? I would love this to be the case. I have mind you heard that story many years ago but nothing came of it. Let’s hope it comes true this time.

I would add that if it’s true Al, then it’s probably a non-Welsh film. I can’t imagine the Welsh luvvies producing something like this. They’re largely a bunch of PC wimps unfortunately.

@Dai: dunno if you are on Facebook, but :

A Glyndwr movie has been talked about for years and years. Who cares? This is ancient history and in any case he was betrayed and beaten in the end – so hardly an uplifting tale.
If something from history is going to be done then surely tales of the Welsh Diaspora would be much more exciting. We have several American Presidents, earliest settlers in America and even religious movements like the Mormons to find stories in. A modern drama, love story is required – maybe even a sports (rugby) story. There is fantastic potential. What do we end up with? The most boring patronising film ever made about Wales with the longest stupidest title imaginable -’The Englishman Who Went Up a Hill But Came Down a Mountain’ starring Hugh Grant.
    WTF.

  7. [...] Cambria Politico are looking for films that can be compared to Plaid Cymru. I have a suggestion: Twilight. Like Twilight, Plaid lack any coherent narrative, point, value and seem to have a number of followers still complete convinced of the positives and showing a blind, unshaking faith in everything about them. Both also fill me with anger based on one point each that I feel needs to be put in capitals IEAUN WYN JONES HAS NOT SAVED THE WELSH ECONOMY and REAL VAMPIRES DO NOT SPARKLE. Ahem. [...]
