We’ve been gagged!

Echoes of Stalinist Russia as Labour tries to gag free speech in Wales.

Following threats of legal action by sinister agents of Huw Lewis AM, we have temporarily unpublished our article about the Labour leadership candidate while we consult legal counsel.

Why have we done this? Why are we bowing to pressure from the hated political class? Where is Freedom of Speech? Where is Freedom of the Press? Why has our blog been singled out for this treatment? How is blogging and citizen journalism affecting the political process?

These are all interesting issues that we shall be exploring in depth in the coming weeks and months leading up to the General Election. But be sure of one thing Cambriapolitico will not be intimidated – The right of Free Speech must be upheld.

  1. OK, I get firsthand from the blowback on my article about sexism that this is a tough and close leadership race. I understand that tempers and nerves are fraying as ballot papers post this week. But using the courts to gag free speech, from an opinion blog?

That seems a bridge too far.

I read your earlier article referencing a known (albeit derisive) nickname for Mr. Lewis and it has been in use for years. What’s actionable there?

Frankly what should seem more offensive to voters in Merthyr is a candidate standing for election in The Valleys but living in the Cardiff/Vale suburb of Penarth? The ‘message optics’ on that one baffle me. That would also seem worthy of question and debate.

Now suing someone in the press for calling names? Are we not talking politics here? Keep them honest Cambria!

  2. I was first to disagree with your characterisation of Huw Lewis manly because there is too much of this negative sh going around. However I would be the first to defend your right to say it. And if Huw Lewis was behind it I would never vote for him in a month of Sundays!
