Leanne WoodPolitical betting. Glad I put my money on earlier for better odds! Online polls, including ours, show Leanne Wood to be streets ahead.

Paddy Power has today made Leanne Wood favourite in the race to be next party leader of Plaid Cymru.

After weeks of Ceredigion AM Elin Jones being top of the pile with its punters, a rush of money over the weekend has led the South Wales AM to 4/5 favourite, overtaking Ms Jones at evens money. The two declared men in the field are slipping down the book, with Lord Ellis-Thomas now at 5/1 and Simon Thomas last at 12/1.

Paddy Power said: “Anyone following Twitter would be a fool not to see the swell of support Leanne is getting and that’s been matched by the number of punters putting their money where there mouth is and backing her. However, Elin is still at evens so there is still a feeling she is not out of the race yet.

“But it’s looking tough for the men. Those lengthening odds suggest punters agree with what Mrs Power is always telling me -that the women are in charge!”

Paddy Power was the first bookmaker to offer odds on the Plaid Leadership and has the widest range of political betting in the UK and Ireland.   One Response to “LEANNE LEAPFROGS INTO PLAID POLE POSITION”

  1. I cannot say that I’m surprised by these odds. I got my bet on with the bookies as soon as I stumbled across Leanne Wood’s webpage in late December (I was actually looking for equipment for my wood burning stove).
I realised that she was the one putative candidate for the leadership of Plaid Cymru who could present the bulk of the people of Wales with a fresh alternative to what has gone before.
In my mind, Wales has always been left-leaning in its political outlook and many are now disenchanted with the alternatives that the mainstream parties are putting forward. I reckoned that she puts forward a set of political beliefs that could win the hearts and minds of many in Wales, and particularly, of those in the South. So I placed my bet.
At the same time, she may even draw in those who might appear to be, at first sight, diametrically opposed to her political stance. By showing no ambivalence in her stance regarding independence, I wouldn’t be surprised if those on the romantic right gave her their support as well.
Nevertheless, I am still putting a small bet on some of the other candidates, because, as in all races, there could be someone out to knobble the front-runner. But there is one thing I’m pretty sure of, and that is that were anything underhanded to take place, I would be looking outside rather than inside Wales for the perpetrator.
