yesforwalesOne of the last requests by our late friend Rhobert ap Steffan was that we should vote YES in the referendum on March 3rd.

I am happy to comply with this request and urge all followers of Cambria Politico to do the same.

  1. If the referendum were in the U.S., most Tea Party folks and Republicans would vote YES because they believe the more local the government, the better it works. They believe the Federal government is getting involved in matters that are not its business. And if the locals are thought not to be doing their job, they can be voted out of office in the next election.

If you vote YES in your referendum, why so much antagonism toward the Tea Party folks and Republicans on this website?

  2. Derry.

Because we don’t want to go around carrying guns or shooting everything like Sara Palin.

If you think that voting Yes makes us right wing sychopaths what a crazy world you live in.

They, thank God they are American. I thank God I am not.

Oh! We have already voted Yes, Postal Vote.

Welsh, not right wing and proud of it.

  3. It is a sad endictment on our society here in Wales, that so many people, especialy professional people, haven’t got a clue what this referendum is about.

When they are asked, they are just completely ignorant of the facts surounding it, or what it entails.

  4. Thanks for your reply, Roger. To oversimplify two complex issues you bring up:
    1. Polls show most Americans are center-right, not right wing. It’s not an either/or issue. The mainstream right in the U.S. doesn’t abide royalists, fascists, etc. Historically, the Republican party has been the party of small business and farmers (folks who do the work themselves, not European manor-type farmers) who prefer to be left alone to do their work, not managed in some way by government. And they are not much interested in telling others how to run their business. Voting YES in the referendum does not make you a right winger. It simply says you believe local political power in some matters is preferred to centralized political power. In the U.S., that’s a basic Republican position.
    2. I do not own a gun or hunt. Most U.S. guns are for hunting, usually for food (small and large game). I believe Ms. Palin (who I do not support) is a hunter. Many parts of the country have sparse populations where the law is hours away. There, people have guns for self-protection against man and beast. In my part of the country, we sometimes have problems with bears and mountain lions (cougars). Some folks keep a gun should non-violent ways of dealing with such animals not work. I suspect much of the impression that every American walks around with a gun shooting up the place comes from the movies. Hollywood usually exaggerates for effect. I’m 77. While I know quite a few people who hunt or shoot at targets with rifles, I never met a person who carried a gun on their person as a matter of habit who was not with the police. I do know ranchers who carry a rifle in their pick-up truck so they can shoot a coyote they see because coyotes do much damage to certain types of livestock.

You needn’t emphasize your Welsh pride to me, Roger. I’m genetically Welsh on both sides. My grandfather Eynon was a coal miner who came to the U.S.around 1890. He died in a mine here.

  5. Derry

My pride comes from living in Wales, spending all my holidays in Wales. Breathing the air culture and history of Wales

My great Grandfathers, Grandfathers and father worked in the collieries in Wales, all died through working in those collieries in Wales.

Our experience in Wales of the parties you mentioned remind us of the extreme right wing over here.

Let us not forget it was the Republican Government who lied their way into a war in Iraq. who used torture and humiliation and locked people up without trial, along with compliance of the shameful lying Government in this country.

By this country I mean England. We had to follow suite because as it stands now we are a part of it and the sooner we are independant of it the better.

With the greatest of respect to yourself, I see every thing that is wrong with this country all stems or comes from America first.

The latest is what our ConDem Coalition Government are doing to the chronicaly ill and disabled people. Forcing them in to a life of greater poverty than they are already in.

All because it has been done over the pond first.

  6. Roger:
If you are fixed on the notion that everything wrong with your country is the fault of my country, then I guess we will have to agree to disagree and leave it at that. But before we end this, a few more points related to your criticisms:
    1. Our Constitution says that only Congress can declare war. We’ve had lots of wars since WWII, but that was the last war approved by Congress. The others were begun by our President under the guise of a “police action’ or some such thing. Part of what’s going on here is a conviction that we need to get back to governing according to the Constitution. You will find many Americans who agree with you on Iraq and torture. That’s one reason for Mr. Bush’s loss of popularity. And Mr. Obama’s continuation of the war has caused many to lose faith in him as well.
    2. In his action as opposed to what he said, Mr. Bush and his crew were Republican in name only. I, frankly, am not sure what he really was or is.
    3. The last poll I saw reported there are more voters registered as “independent” today than are registered with either major party. And just because one is registered as a Republican or a Democrat doesn’t mean that you agree with everything the party promotes. “Ticket splitting” happens quite frequently for that reason.
Thanks for taking the time to answer my question. Best wishes in your continuing devolution from England.

  7. Not sure which way to vote: check out my handy voter’s guide: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nKSTk4i9QF4

  8. Hi my name is Adam Nantel and I found your blog via the wales blog awards. I’ve been reading your posts on the site and have really enjoyed them.
I’ve recently created a new website called http://mywales.info on Saint David’s day.
Would you be willing to write a guest post or two on the site as I think it would make a great addition. If you want you could add a link to your blog in your article to your site too. If you do decide to do this you can sign up on the front page to write an article. Thank you Adam

  9. Nobody at all seems to declare war formally these days. A cove who knows about these things told me that the last country on which the UK declared war was Thailand in 1940-something.
The first thing an independent Wales should do is to declare war on the Serene Republic of San Marino. No actual hostilities would take place, but it would boost the Serene Republic’s tourist industry, and give the surviving True Wales membership an issue with which to occupy their declining years.
